Thought I would write a blog about this new unwelcome but challenging chapter in my life. What you will find is an honest opinion of my journey with cancer – if coarse language and dodgy wit are not your thing maybe this is not for you! Doing this for myself (I think) and hoping that it will make women understand breast cancer more and get checking those boobies!!!!!

Firstly I am sure you never thought you would be looking for a wig? Sorry you have the need for a wig. We are hoping we can take some of the stress out of your cancer treatment and take the worrying cost of a wig out of the equation for you. All these wigs have been kindly donated by people who have had cancer. We would like to offer you our wigs for a lend and then afterwards maybe we can share them with someone else or some owners would like them back. You would be so very welcome to one of these lovely wigs and its special for us too that someone gets to use it. We all wish you the best of luck on your cancer trail and hope you kick the shite out of it. Can you believe its only two more sleeps? Oh what fun we are going to have ladies. This will be our biggest dip with around 250-30o women taking part.
11.30/12.00″ish”PM START at the beach car park
The beach we are doing it at is called Magheramore Beach in between Wicklow Town and Brittas Bay Beach.
This is the same beach as we did it for last four years
It is a private beach and will be manned by two security guys and one security person at the top of the beach to block off intruders from any other beaches. There will also be women from the local Rugby Club ensuring our privacy. Wayne will be the only man in the vicinity and has to be there to make sure other people don’t. The beach is approximately 8km from Wicklow Town heading towards Brittas Bay.
I think you will agree its a fabulous beach and is privately owned and can only be accessed by a small dirt track. The owner of the property has also kindly donated the services of three security people to make sure its just us.
There will be some people meeting up in the car park of the Grand Hotel in Wicklow at 11.30am if you would like to come up with a gang. We can share lifts etc and have a bit of craic.
We are to meet at 11.30/12 noon ish so we can have a bit of a giggle. When driving to destination (see map below) for big map….. “go through Wicklow Town towards the coast and keep going, you will pass Wicklow golf club on your left after another 4km you will pass Blainroe Golf Club. Slow down you are 2km from the beach on the left hand side you will see a sign saying Beach Closed til 4pm Today when you see this you got the right beach. You will see a barrier and two guys at the barrier then you are at the right place. There are one of three passwords you have to give them to get in its either

Whats happening on the day
Meet from 11.30/12 at the beach car-park. Come down in whatever clothes you want and we can get changed into whatever in the Car Park, people are wearing dressing gowns, dresses, big t-shirts, vajazzles whatever you feel comfortable in of course. A good few women are wearing fun hats and gimmicky thing so feel free to do (or not to do) whatever you want. Loads of body art going on as well.
Most people would bring a tipple or two to have in the car park before the dip. After a while and a few nips of whatever tickles your fancy.
At around 1.15/130 we will head down to the beach. This year we have a big prop especially made by the lovely Yvonne Sheridan for our group photo. Barbra will be doing the photographs again. There is a flag at the bottom of the prop please drop your gowns there and run behind the prop. Smaller people at the front so the ones behind can get in the shot. The prop will be covering everyone’s bits so don’t worry about that. Remember if you can’t see the photographer the photographer can’t see you. We will have a loudspeaker on the day so will bark orders at you
This will be an amazing photo of us all on the day and will be used on Social Media and hopefully some newspapers. I will ensure that there are no bits showing – I have years of whiting out boobs on Photoshop at this stage (if there are any seen).
When Barbra is happy that she has all the photos she needs of the Group her photo aid Davina will run up onto the hill of the beach to prepare for a shot of us all going in from behind. This will be the back of us so no-one recognisable only those who have seen your ass before maybe Once Davina is set up there we will get a countdown on the megaphone 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 then its run for your lives.
We have one more thing which we will do after the dip. It’s the words Cancer Kickers and would love if anyone who has gone through cancer or is currently going through it would get in this shot as a celebration that there is life after cancer.
VERY IMPORTANT – PHONES AND PHOTOGRAPHY
There will be two photographers on the day and I will have someone take a video on my phone of us all running into the sea. No other phones or photography allowed on the beach we have to respect each others privacy. So please leave your phones in the car park. If you want some “cheeky” shots of you and friends or family that’s no problem just ask the photographer and Barbra will give me all the photos and I can forward them to you. Last few years we arranged messages on bums this is not planned for this year but please ladies if you want to do something for you and your friends please go for it and just tell the photographer you would like the shot.
Please be careful of putting pictures on Facebook from the car park please make sure that no other dipper is shown in a state of undress
Suggest maybe bring a bottle of bubbly (cheap or expensive) and a couple of plastic glasses to toast ourselves afterwards. Please Please make sure you bring plastic bags for your rubbish, this is a private beach and they have had issues before with illegal dumping. Recently people left it in a mess and they have cleaned all the litter away at a huge cost to the property owner. They have been so kind to let us use this property we have to make sure not a scrap is left behind – thanks Ladies.
After the Dip
We are ALL going up to the Mariner Pub in Wicklow town for a drink or two. Here we hope to get as many people as possible including those that are not staying down we are hoping you will join us. Wayne our security man has kindly sorted food for us (and he has paid so kind) so there will be some hot platters going around and sambos. Sinead Hamill will be doing her Ditty about the Strip and Dip. Wayne has organised some music for us too. J J Jelwellers across the road are helping sponsor this event with music, food and security and will have 20% off for dippers on the day and they are just across the road from the pub.
90 of us staying over in Wicklow Town and you all know where you are staying at that stage. Roughly 14 other people as well joining us for the meal. Meet up in Bar of Grand Hotel for 8pm and go into dinner there for 8.30 for two course meal and coffee €25 per person paid by each person, if anyone wants to join us please let me know. The hotel is putting on a DJ for us after in the main bar so it will be great and we can dance til the wee hours.
We would really prefer not to get cash donations due to the safety reasons. Maybe you could donate it to yourselves online if you have an idonate account.

A Big Thanks to You
A huge thanks to all of you doing this. I know around half of you personally and for some of you I know it takes a lot of courage to do this. We are going to have a FABULOUS DAY
To the people I don’t know personally and I have met through the blogs, we have chatted in the middle of the night when we couldn’t sleep, spoke in chemo rooms and helped each other out when things seemed really dark. Women are amazing people with huge hearts and we are all there to help each other. A lot of you are travelling from Cork, Kildare, Limerick, Laois, Dublin, Sweden, Austria, London, Liverpool, Essex and Rose Vacher came all the way from Australia to be with us.
Lastly this funding will make a huge difference to the children at Aoibheanns Pink Tie and their family and you have all gone above and beyond the call of duty with fund-raising.
As at 08.00 (Online Only Three days before) we have raised €22,702.00 – AMAZING – we will definitely smash all records this year ladies.

Hi all… delighted our 5th Strip and Dip has been announced and there is an amazing response with over 280 people registered so far. There are a lot of questions so I am hoping this document will cover some of them for you. If you have any questions at all just post them on the Facebook Event.
Does it cost to join? – there is no fee for joining us, all we ask is you keep the area and beach pristine clean, it has to be left same way we found it
Is it just ladies? – yes this is a women only event (sorry lads)
Where is it on? – it is on in a secluded beach in Wicklow roughly 7 kms from Wicklow Town…. we can’t publicly say the beach but will let you know in due course
Security? – we have security on the entrance to the beach and security people on the day ensuring that no other people apart from dippers have access – so it’s just us ladies
Car Park? – there is car parking available at the beach please bring as many people in one car so everyone can park. There is room for roughly 150 cars so as the numbers are so big please car share.
What Happens on the day? – people arrive from 11.30 or 12 noon and usually park up and shoot the breeze, have a few tipples, do body art if there are into it and basically hang out for an hour or two
What time do we dip? We will plan to have the dip at roughly 1.30 we will head down tot he beach roughly 1pm
Photography – when we get to the beach there will be photographs taken by the official photographers and we will be behind a big prop etc
The official photographers will take loads of photos of us before, after and during the dip. A few shots of us all running in from behind so nobody is recognizable
These images may be used in Media and Social Media so if this is a problem for you maybe this event is not right for you – I will control this and anything that I post again nobody would be recognisable (well maybe your lover might recognise your ass!)
Nobody can take phone photographs on the actual beach. Phones can be used after EVERYONE is out of the water and clothed again
Before we leave the beach and the car park we ensure that every single piece of rubbish goes with us
Access to the beach is kindly given to us on the day by the owner and security is also donated by the owner so we need to respect this and ensure the place is as beautiful as it was when we arrive
Wayne is our Chief of Security – he organises the beach for us every year and the security and is just a great guy – Wayne will be the only man on the day (but wont go down to the beach with us) – Wayne reckons he has the best job in Ireland on this day
Ladies please understand that the Dip is taken at your own risk and no liability is attached to us or the owners of the land leading to the beach
After the dip we usually go to a pub in Wicklow and have a few drinks… more details to follow
Some people will go home straight after the dip which of course is okay but its good fun in the pub catching up with everyone, Sinead Hamill does a big Ditty on the dip which is always hilarious
After the pub some people head home and some people stay for the night in the local hotels.
Accommodation if staying over - There are roughly 70 people staying down so far this year. The Grand Hotel in Wicklow is fully booked out with us and people have called and reserved their rooms. The cost is €44 per person sharing in a double room and €37 per person sharing in a triple room. The other option is I have booked out the whole of the Bridge Tavern so you can reserve a room there. You need to call them to book it. We will have a dinner in the Grand Hotel this year and cost approximately €25-27 per head and I will get numbers closer to the date
We are fundraising for Aoibheanns Pink Tie which is the National Cancer Charity of Ireland – 97% of ALL proceeds to to the family and kids fighting cancer – their aim is to make their journey more comfortable and bring in as much happiness as possible. So when we fundraise for this charity we are not paying a bit salary to a CEO – the kids get it all.
The best way to fundraise is to do it online. Please following instructions below to set up your account (which is free to set up of course and just takes a minute or two)
All monies collected should be lodged to the bank account of the Charity which I can provide details of. However please let us know when you lodge it how much you are lodging so we can keep our totals. Information on Aoibheanns Pink Tie
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie “National Children’s Cancer Charity” was set up in 2010 by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman after the tragic loss of Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann to cancer aged just 8 years. During Aoibheann’s year long battle with this dreadful disease, the family found little or no financial or practical support for children and their families.
Jimmy and his family had a large support network of friends and family but found that many on the ward had virtually no support at all.
When Aoibheann passed away the men wore pink ties at the funeral which was Aoibheann’s favourite colour. The charity was formed in her memory to remedy the lack of support for other children and their families going through treatment.
Families of children diagnosed with cancer are completely and utterly focused on their sick child. The regular travel to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital from all over Ireland, the extended overnight stays consume all waking moments during this battle and the day to day necessities of life fall by the wayside or become impossible to manage. Medical cards are incredibly difficult to get if either spouse is in employment, mortgages, utility bills, motoring costs and general household bills become lost in the mire of the battle as they struggle with one of life’s worst nightmares. Phone bills, accommodation costs and medical bills become a huge burden for the parents who have to endure the nightmare of watching their child battle cancer.
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie will help and offer practical support to the families of children diagnosed with cancer and who are attending St John’s Oncology Ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. Focused on children attending the only treatment center for childhood cancer in Ireland, we will support the complete family unit, of parents and siblings, who may not understand what is happening to their Brother or Sister.
Well folks it’s that time of year again – what time? My favourite time, when all fabulous women get together and dash naked into the Irish Sea.
This is our fourth year and again we are dipping for Aoibheanns Pink Tie the most wonderful Children’s Cancer Charity run by volunteers so our donations are going to people who really need it.

What to Expect on the Day
We will meet up at 12.00/12.30 at a beach in Wicklow (I will give everyone that contacts me details on the night before – just so we keep the wildlife away)
Women arrive and usually all gather around in the car park, shoot the breeze and then have a tipple or two
When the bus arrives from Cork we know its nearly time to head to the beach
Usually women change into dressing gowns or whatever they like in the car park before we go down to the beach
Some women do body art, wear mad wigs etc.etc. so whatever tickles your fancy – anything goes
There will be one man among us. The most wonderful Chief of Security Wayne Geordie who every year has giving so generously his time and money to ensure that we are secure. Wayne will be in the Car Park as he has been in other years as he has a lot of things to sort out. So if changing just be aware there will be one man there – most of us don’t care what he sees but just wanted everyone to know that
The lovely Wayne supplies security for us every year. He has men on the gates so no other people have access to the beach while we dip. His job is to ensure that when we are down on the beach we are all happy and secure that we are by ourselves, women, beautiful, big, small and tall. Wayne stays above ground and make sure no-one gets some fabulous eye candy
When we get down to the beach we will have a message for the world which we will all hide behind while we de-robe
This year we have two messages as always these are done by the legendary Mr Patrick O’Carrol and Alphabet Graphics
There will be some messages on bums too (pre-arranged with people)
Also every year I love to get a shot of women who have made it through cancer so please join us if you were one of the lucky ones
These photos will be shown on Social Media (but we will all be covered) so without sounding rude if anyone has a problem with that then maybe this dip is not for you
The lovely Barbra Hackettis doing the photography again this year for us. Barbra will be in the car park taking photos of us all and will be down on the beach with us. We will have a shot of us all running into the sea from afar where no-one will be recognisable – well maybe your partner, lover or mother might recognise your ass – again if you have a problem with this photo again re-think doing this.
People after the dip can use their phones for photos of course but please ensure that
nobody is naked in any of them before posting
Also everyone gets giggly and brave after and are dying to take naked shots – that’s cool take them of you and your friends but not of other people
Yearly we had a private group of photos after of nude shots from the day which was in a password protected group. This year we will not do this as some people had a problem with it and did not understand it was just us that had access.
After our dip people usually lounge around and have another dip or two or hug their besties and revel in what they have just done
Before we leave the beach we ensure that we do not leave one tiny bit of litter anywhere
After the beach we all head down to Wicklow Town for a pint or two where Wayne has organised and paid for some nibbles for us and Sinead Hamill will get up and read a Ditty she made about our Strip and Dip.
After that people usually head home, or to their hotel/B&B and we meet up later on for dinner
Dinner this year is in the Grand Hotel and we will meet in the bar there at 8 and aim to eat at 9.
We have a private room and they will have some background music – and hopefully we will be all making music too

Well our Third Annual Strip and Dip took place last weekend. Well what a weekend we had was absolutely amazing. We laughed from 12pm to 4am (or thereabouts) over 85 we reckon this year stripped and dipped and the fun we had was just brilliant. up to €14,000 for Aoibheanns Pink Tie – (who support children with cancer and run totally voluntarily)
This year I decided that I wanted to get a message out there. Sure what better way to do it than bollock naked on a beach in Wicklow. I really wanted these pictures as thought people might share because they were fun. When people share the Blog gets mentioned, people might check out the blog and have a read and decide to maybe go get checked, might forward to a person undergoing breast cancer and they might read and have a giggle and cheer themselves up. If one person gets checked I am happy my whole aim is to avoid
women having to go through what I have.

Well its been another roller coaster of a year for me and my health but feeling great now.
I’ve had a lot of medical issues but these are all now dealt with thankfully. Had only three operations this year and all results were good and now have a bigger boob and a “sort of nipple”. Next stop tattoo to make it look like more like the other one. Next August another operation to try get the two of them the same size. Unfortunately a huge waiting list so can’t be done sooner.
As always I have been blessed throughout the year with friends and family and all your support. Been reading back through this blog a bit in the last few weeks and while I have enjoyed it made me quite sad in an inexplicable way. Lost a lot of people this year to the little “c” as always not going to give the bastard a big head with “The Big C”. It seems to be continuous, some people who were reading this blog have passed away, some friends have passed and away and some beautiful children. Life is just so unfair and cruel sometimes.
Right on with the happy hat……..
At the moment I can honestly say I am through the tunnel and my nose is peeping out the other side What’s in store for me next? That’s the fun part of not knowing your future you just never know what it brings. Been toying with the idea of a book and see if anyone would be interested in it. Also thinking of a new career for the new me where maybe I could be involved with cancer and helping others through it in some way…. mind is thinking….

Just a quick post for those not on Facebook…. lol just in the off-chance you might want to hear my news
Well, I was in Vinnies today to check out how the operation with my new nipple went last week. You may remember I said in my last post a doctor kept saying “ask for me” when I was whacked out in recovery. Rocked up and said “I am supposed to ask for someone I can’t remember his name but think he was an Aussie”. “Ahhhh Conor” she said.
In I went nurse took off the bandages…… God I was honestly nervous in case it hadn’t worked, in fairness though in my heart and soul I knew it did. While the lovely nurse was taking off my bandages I said “Oh God I hope it just doesn’t fall off” she was laughing and saying “don’t say that” and said “everything is looking great”. I was like a child on Christmas Eve waiting to see what was under the wrapper.
Well under the wrapper was a nipple (quite big but seemingly it reduces over the next week or two), stitches both sides but nurse said it looked okay. Sure what’s another scar at this stage I have so many – who needs tattoos Was so weird nurse went out and I was just lying there looking down and looking at a nipple…. it sounds so bizarre and maybe only people who have been through it can understand the feeling. It was like WOW I am nearly back to what I was. When nurse went I got up from the bed and had a look in the mirror (felt like a naughty teenager and of course I was never one of those)…… now its far from pretty at the moment but it is there and it is mine.
Mad thing happened while the nurse was slowly taking the bandages off the new one, I got little stabbing sensations of pain in my old boob. This happened around four times, they would take another layer of bandage off again a little dart. Was again quite bizarre and definitely not just my imagination in a way it was maybe one twin saying to the other…. WHEY HEY HEY we are back together
Was talking to my friend Naomi earlier who had the same procedure done and in her own words said “I feel complete again”. That just summed it up it’s a feeling of WOW I am so near the end and I feel nearly complete again. At the moment it’s just a nipple I asked the “quite seriously cute” Aussie doc when I could have the tattoo of the Areola and he said probably three months. At this stage who cares…. its taken nearly 18 months to build this new one and what’s another few months. Thankfully it’s not a Logan special and another year.
Was thinking…… always said I would have a big bash after the whole thing was over so looking like maybe March for the big booze up to celebrate EVERYTHING is done and dusted. Hopefully like the “last chemo party” you will all join me
In the meantime its bandages back on, another week on antibiotics and a party to look forward to on Saturday. Happy Birthday Karen Meagen

This was actually only meant to be a paragraph or two…. maybe I am getting my MOJO back
So weird not to have written for so long. Laptop keyboard is broken and it’s just not the same writing on a PC. Has to be in bed with a cuppa feeling cosy, however have not got my arse out of the bed to get the Laptop fixed, so PC it is
Since I have last written loads have happened and all good Two operations and a fashion show in the last five months. Not one visit to the Doctor for any ailments – that I will drink to. They had a seat with my name on it in the local GP’s. On Blood Pressure tablets for life as an outcome – that’s no bother just a pill a day and on Tamoxifin for five or maybe seven years as an insurance policy for recurring cancer, no problem with that either, thankfully for me no side effects and it’s just a pill.
Over two years now since being diagnosed and everyday brings me closer and closer to the finish line (I have in my head). Finish lines for people with cancer are different, there are loads of finishing lines to be honest, mine is when I look in my “non-existent” diary and don’t see any operations looming or procedures planned. My finishing line will be when I have walked the walk, talked the talk, did the time, did the pain, most importantly have the all clear. To me especially it is when I can look down at my body or look into a mirror and see a pair of boobs that look back at me and look okay. Both similar in size and both have nipples and I feel like a woman again. That finishing line is within my sights now….. I am so nearly there, next Thursday will be a big day and if the word is good after my nipple op on Wednesday, then a few weeks later its the tattoo of the areola then that’s Dancer and Prancer done and dusted and ready to rock and roll. Might I add perched way higher than where they were two years ago and looking a lot smaller (lol no harm there).
My little one Beca was over in my sisters house and “took” something. Next morning she said Mammy I stole something in Mia’s yesterday – I said OMG What…. she showed me the back of the car – she had taken the Breast Cancer Ribbon off Mias car and put it on mine. “Mammy your the real cancer kicker you deserve the sticker”
Following on from the wonderful Strip and Dip in the end we raised €28,000 for Aoibheanns Pink Tie we were all delighted with the results and the money was put to great use and us Fan FuckingTastic women had an absolute blast doing it. Few weeks later had a lovely holiday in Sweden with the family, was a great holiday with fantastic weather and very relaxing. Came back like a new woman!
As mentioned earlier I am on Tamoxifen and a lot of women get side effects (I unfortunately did not get any). Apart from the fact that I was bleeding (like a period) when really I shouldn’t have been. I called the hospital and they said I should get checked out which I did. Met with the Gynaecologist in Vincent’s and they said considering my “history” it would be best to get a D&C (scraping of the womb) to ensure that everything was in order. It was noted that while I was on the table they would “pop” a coil in as well which would also regulate the bleeding. They also said that given my “history” they would do a biopsy and check for any ovarian or other cancer cells that may be lurking around.
I had my operation and while waiting to go down was told I was also having a hysteroscopy which seemingly takes a good look around the place “up there”. So two for the price of one, actually three got the coil as well. Wheeled up to pre-theatre and one of the nurses said “Ah hello Deirdre I see your back with us again” My Plastic Surgeon the lovely Cathriona Lawlor saw my name on the list and came over and said she was trying to make it a four in one and while under give me a nipple as well but due to time constraints couldn’t.
Anyhow moving swiftly along everything went okay, when in recovering the Gynaecologist said that everything looked okay and I would get my results in around 8 weeks. To be honest I wasn’t worried in the slightest about any other cancer as it never entered my head for a minute that I had any other cancer. Went in for my results around two weeks ago now and they sat me down and said that everything looked just perfect. Not a hint of a bastard cancer cell and nothing all looking like it could turn into a bastard cancer cell. Now even though not worried at all……. to hear someone say that to you was just wonderful. A clean slate nothing to worry about. Happy Days!
Then I was one of the lucky ladies to be asked to model in the Marie Keating Foundation Annual Survive and Thrive Fashion show a few weeks ago. Well my God what a Day we had it was just brilliant. It was a night of celebrating women who came through breast cancer, remembering those that didn’t and giving hope to those that were going through it. We got pampered from start to finish and had a brilliant day and night with loads and loads of fun way into the early hours

Are you still awake??
Well last weekend had a blast with my girlie friends and had a three-day stint in Glasgow. Talk about laughing glad I had no stitches to burst. We laughed from morning to night including getting stuck in lifts at 4am for an hour. Acting like total teenagers playing prank jokes on the phone – HOW OLD ARE WE? lol hopefully never too old. Favourite one was call say John Smith (with loads of letters after his name) … is that John Smith, ACII, ACI, MSC, Bhons, Dip…. yes….. – “God you’re a brainy bollox aren’t you”…..mmmmmmm
Last Wednesday went into Vincent’s for my reconstruction nipple operation and making new boob bigger to match the old one. Rocked in around 10.30 into the guna I know the drill by now it was my 8th operation. Nurses know me by name. Got all the usual poking and prodding, ecg, bloods, samples, blood pressure, forms to fill out etc.etc. It was told it would take an hour or two til I was brought down – deadly…. time for a nap was pretty sleep deprived after Glasgow. My lovely Plastic Surgeon came to visit me and tell me what would be happening. I would be getting liposuction in my tummy which will fill out my new boob and a reconstructed nipple. There is a chance that my nipple wont “take” especially as it is a radiated boob – but I am crossing everything that it will work as I only get one shot at it. So POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE firmly in place.
Operation went well. A doctor came over after I was in recovery and told me to ask for him next Thursday as he was in the operating room. He said the nipple was very thin as it was so close to the implant. I think I said around four times – what’s your name again? Still have no idea what his name was but think he had an Aussie accent Everything bandaged up til the big reveal on Thursday…… I can feel its gonna be okay and then I really am – nearly there, nearly there, nearly there. If all goes okay its then a tattoo in around 7 weeks or so that will finish EVERYTHING
At the moment I am black and blue, battered, knackered and just came out of a day of feeling sorry for myself (I blame the drugs) - ah sure I suppose that’s allowed every now and again
Guess who is gonna get one Fan Fucking Tastic bra for Christmas this year.
Myself and my daughter Katie are listening to this now – crank it up – arms in the air everyone!!! That’s defo a cheek ass jiggler
