Thought I would write a blog about this new unwelcome but challenging chapter in my life.  What you will find is an honest opinion of my journey with cancer – if coarse language and dodgy wit are not your thing maybe this is not for you!   Doing this for myself (I think) and hoping that it will make women understand breast cancer more and get checking those boobies!!!!!

Schedule of the Day

 

Dippers Day & Night June 9th

Brief outline of the morning, day and night for

Strip & Dip – 9th June

8.30-10.30 –  Breakfast for those wanting some will be in The Ballroom from 8am and is available for €10 (for non-guests) and hotel will donate 20% of this to the charity.

9.15 – Practice for Song “This is Me” in The Grand Hotel,  Song below with lyrics.  Please learn the lyrics ladies we will not have words in our hands :-)

Very excited to say that Today FM will be having a live broadcast at the Hotel from 8am – 11am the morning show with Alison Curtis   So there will be plenty of excitement with them being there and after rehearsing our song a couple of times in another room we will sing it in the main ballroom and it will go out live on air.

9.45 – We will do the song (and it will go out on TodayFM live0 is amazing and hopefully it will fly all over social media afterwards while we are on the way to the dip.

10.30-11.00 You can leave your car in the Car Park of The Grand Hotel and take a bus up with us.   Return trip in a bus will be €5 – bus will pick us up after the dip and drop us back to the Hotel .  If you want to drive up that is no problem.   Go do the beach in your normal clothes and bring a back back with you of t-shirt of dressing gown and a towel.

10.30-12.15 – People will all meet up in the Car Park of the Meaghermore beach, where most people may have a tipple or two, some body art and basically some shenanigans and laughter.   We encourage people to get the bus but there is parking available at the beach so feel free to bring your car.  Wayne is our Chief of Security on the day he will be the only man in the car park among us as he needs to be there.  Wayne stays up in the Car Park when we go to dip.  Wayne has been doing this for years and we would be lost without him.   We will also have use of a field beside this carpark the policemen on the gates will tell you where to park.

There will be people collecting donations – please make sure if you have donations that they are a bank draft or a cheque made payment to Aoibheann’s Pink tie – thanks. Sterling bank drafts and cheques are of course welcome.

Please note that no children will be allowed on the day it is an Adult Only event.

There will also be a table where we will ask every to sign an insurance form for your protection on the day.  Please note that we can not take responsibility for items you leave in the carpark, the carpark will be manned by a Ban Gardai and Wayne our head of Security.  For those parking in the other area of the carpark (a field) the gate to this field will be manned by two policemen.

12.00-121.15- After all getting into our dressing gowns or t-shirts for the day we will go down to the beach (you will be counted on the way down to the beach) and then we gather on the beach and take some photos with official photographer.  We may also have a drone on the day for when we are all still in our t-shirts to wave up to.   A few songs may be sung and general craic will be had.  There will be loads of stewards on the day to count us all and we will have first aiders and life guards.  As the event is so massive this year we ask for your patience as it will be a big job to ensure we are all counted properly.  We have to get counted in 50s and official signed off by a steward.   Very Importantabsolutely no phones or pictures to be taken down to the beach we all have to respect each other’s privacy… if there is a special photo you want taken with a group of friends just ask any of the photographers to take it for you.   Usually photos like this are taken after the dip… so before dip will be just a huge photo and after you can have group photos taken.

12.45pm – we aim to dip – you will hear the big siren someone announce that it is time to run in…. we will disrobe and all run in together, totally hysteric with whoops and hollers and we all have to be in the water for five minutes up to your waist – singing, laughter, hollering and cursing are allowed….

FAQ Worlds Largest Skinny Dip

Hi all… delighted our 6th Strip and Dip has been announced and there is an amazing response so far.  This year we are aiming to break The Guinness Book of World Record for Largest Skinny Dip – we need over 1200 people on the day and registered to ensure we beat it. There are a lot of questions so I am hoping this document will cover some of them for you.  If you have any questions at all just post them on the Facebook Event.

  • Date – 9th  June 2018
  • Time – Meet from 10.30 am at beach – finish time around 2/3pm – there will also be buses organised from The Grand Hotel in Wicklow going up and down to the beach before and after the dip so you could leave you car there and join us on the bus
  • How can I register to go? – Firstly please go to our event page and hit going https://www.facebook.com/events/679763562183232/ and hit on going and your in.
  • Official Registration – we would ask that you then officially register on www.iregister.ie/worldslargestskinnydip
  • Does it cost to join? – there is a non refundable fee of a modest €10 which will be used for insurance, security, props needed, first aiders etc.  All proceeds that are not used in connection with the Dip will go straight to Aoibheanns Pink Tie
  • Is it just ladies? – yes this is a women only event (sorry lads)
  • Where is it on? – it is on in a secluded beach in Wicklow roughly 7 kms from Wicklow Town….
  • Security? – we have security on the entrance to the beach and security people on the day ensuring that no other people apart from dippers have access – so it’s just us ladies
  • Car Park? – there is car parking available at the beach please bring as many people in one car so everyone can park.  There is room for roughly 150 cars so as the numbers are so big please car share.   We will also be running a mini bus from The Grand hotel in Wicklow to the beach and back – might be a good idea to leave your car there and come up by bus.
  • What Happens on the day? – people arrive from 1030 and usually park up and shoot the breeze, have a few tipples, do body art if there are into it and basically hang out for an hour or two
  • What time do we dip? We arrive from 10.30am…. we will plan to have the dip at roughly 12.30 we will head down to the beach roughly 12pm – there may be a slight change on the day due to tides.
  • Photography – when we get to the beach there will be photographs taken by the official photographers
  • The official photographers will take loads of photos of us before, after and during the dip. A few shots of us all running in from behind so nobody is recognizable
  • Also we will need to take videos of proof for Guinness Book of Records
  • These images may be used in Media and Social Media so if this is a problem for you maybe this event is not right for you – I will control this and anything that I post again nobody would be recognisable (well maybe your lover might recognise your ass!)
  • Nobody can take phone photographs on the actual beach.   Phones can be used after EVERYONE is out of the water and clothed again
  • Before we leave the beach and the car park we ensure that every single piece of rubbish goes with us
  • Access to the beach is kindly given to us on the day by the owner and security is also donated by the owner so we need to respect this and ensure the place is as beautiful as it was when we arrive
  • Wayne is our Chief of Security – he organises the beach for us every year and the security and is just a great guy – Wayne will be the only man on the day (but wont go down to the beach with us) – Wayne reckons he has the best job in Ireland on this day :-)
  • Ladies please understand that the Dip is taken at your own risk and no liability is attached to us or the owners of the land leading to the beach
  • After the dip we usually go to a pub in Wicklow and have a few drinks… more details to follow
  • Some people will go home straight after the dip which of course is okay but its good fun in the pub catching up with everyone, Sinead Hamill does a big Ditty on the dip which is always hilarious
  • After the pub some people head home and some people stay for the night in the local hotels.
  • Accommodation if staying over - There are roughly 250 women staying over for the dip in various accommodation in Wicklow.  To be honest I am running out of ideas.  So I can’t really recommend anywhere.  There is camping available www.silverstrand.ie you could check out Air B&B as well and maybe Wicklow Tourist Board.
  • We are hoping to have a band of DJ Grand Hotel this year which will pay from around 10pm after.
  • Usually we do a big dinner but numbers are just too big I think… so maybe make plans with people you are with or we can all meet up in The Grand anyhow

Fundraising/Sponsorship

  • We are fundraising for Aoibheanns Pink Tie which is the National Cancer Charity of Ireland – 97% of ALL proceeds to the family and kids fighting cancer – their aim is to make their journey more comfortable and bring in as much happiness as possible.   So when we fund raise for this charity we are not paying a bit salary to a CEO – the kids get it all.
  • The best way to fundraise is to do it online.  Please following instructions below to set up your account (which is free to set up of course and just takes a minute or two)

  • Create an account for you and basically follow the steps – give yourself a username then choose to create a fundraising page and follow on from there

  • We aim to raise as much as possible so your efforts are really appreciated

Offline Fundraising

  • It is of course okay as well do fundraise offline (all fundraising is great).  you can download a sponsorship card here and print it off

  • All monies collected should be lodged directly to the Bank Account of the charity or if this is not possible please bring it on the day and there will be designated people to hand the money.   Another thing you can do is any monies you have collected you can upload it online to the main idonate account which is  www.idonate.ie/worldslargestskinnydip  In the comments just put your name so we know it came from you
  • When you use the online facility the funds weekly go direct to the charity

  • Over the last few years we have received a lot of sponsorship from companies

You Will Never Dip Alone
For women who are coming to dip by themselves… this is a way to get chatting to other women also in the same boat.  We will be arranging a place for “all the single ladies” to meet and go up on the bus together from the hotel to the beach.  So far there are over 100 ladies in this group so you will never be on your own.

 Information on Aoibheanns Pink Tie Aoibheann’s Pink Tie “National Children’s Cancer Charity” was set up in 2010 by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman after the tragic loss of Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann to cancer aged just 8 years. During Aoibheann’s year long battle with this dreadful disease, the family found little or no financial or practical support  for children and their families. Jimmy and his family had a large support network of friends and family but found that many on the ward had virtually no support at all. When Aoibheann passed away the men wore pink ties at the funeral which was Aoibheann’s favourite colour. The charity was formed in her memory to remedy the lack of support for other children and their families going through treatment. Families of children diagnosed with cancer are completely and utterly focused on their sick child. The regular travel to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital from all over Ireland, the extended overnight stays consume all waking moments during this battle and the day-to-day necessities of life fall by the wayside or become impossible to manage. Medical cards are incredibly difficult to get if either spouse is in employment, mortgages, utility bills, motoring costs and general household bills become lost in the mire of the battle as they struggle with one of life’s worst nightmares. Phone bills, accommodation costs and medical bills become a huge burden for the parents who have to endure the nightmare of watching their child battle cancer. Aoibheann’s Pink Tie will help and offer practical support to the families of children diagnosed with cancer and who are attending St John’s Oncology Ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. Focused on children attending the only treatment center for childhood cancer in Ireland, we will support the complete family unit, of parents and siblings, who may not understand what is happening to their Brother or Sister. Need a Wig?

Welcome to Caroline’s Wig Library

Firstly I am sure you never thought you would be looking for a wig?   Sorry you have the need for a wig.   We are hoping we can take some of the stress out of your cancer treatment and take the worrying cost of a wig out of the equation for you.   All these wigs have been kindly donated by people who have had cancer.   We would like to offer you our wigs for a lend and then afterwards maybe we can share them with someone else or some owners would like them back.  You would be so very welcome to one of these lovely wigs and its special for us too that someone gets to use it.  We all wish you the best of luck on your cancer trail and hope  you kick the shite out of it. Strip and Dip Details 2017

Can you believe its only two more sleeps? Oh what fun we are going to have ladies. This will be our biggest dip with around 250-30o women taking part.

11.30/12.00″ish”PM START at the beach car park

The beach we are doing it at is called Magheramore Beach in between Wicklow Town and Brittas Bay Beach.

This is the same beach as we did it for last four years :-)

It is a private beach and will be manned by two security guys and one security person at the top of the beach to block off intruders from any other beaches.  There will also be women from the local Rugby Club ensuring our privacy. Wayne will be the only man in the vicinity and has to be there to make sure other people don’t. The beach is approximately 8km from Wicklow Town heading towards Brittas Bay.

I think you will agree its a fabulous beach and is privately owned and can only be accessed by a small dirt track. The owner of the property has also kindly donated the services of three security people to make sure its just us.

There will be some people meeting up in the car park of the Grand Hotel in Wicklow at 11.30am if you would like to come up with a gang.  We can share lifts etc and have a bit of craic.

Start Time

We are to meet at 11.30/12 noon ish so we can have a bit of a giggle. When driving to destination (see map below) for big map….. “go through Wicklow Town towards the coast and keep going, you will pass Wicklow golf club on your left after another 4km you will pass Blainroe Golf Club. Slow down you are 2km from the beach on the left hand side you will see a sign saying Beach Closed til 4pm Today when you see this you got the right beach. You will see a barrier and two guys at the barrier then you are at the right place. There are one of three passwords you have to give them to get in its either

Whats happening on the day

Meet from 11.30/12 at the beach car-park. Come down in whatever clothes you want and we can get changed into whatever in the Car Park, people are wearing dressing gowns, dresses, big t-shirts, vajazzles whatever you feel comfortable in of course. A good few women are wearing fun hats and gimmicky thing so feel free to do (or not to do) whatever you want.  Loads of body art going on as well.

Most people would bring a tipple or two to have in the car park before the dip.  After a while and a few nips of whatever tickles your fancy.

At around 1.15/130 we will head down to the beach.  This year we have a big prop especially made by the lovely Yvonne Sheridan for our group photo.   Barbra will be doing the photographs again.  There is a flag at the bottom of the prop please drop your gowns there and run behind the prop.  Smaller people at the front so the ones behind can get in the shot.   The prop will be covering everyone’s bits so don’t worry about that.  Remember if you can’t see the photographer the photographer can’t see you.  We will have a loudspeaker on the day so will bark orders at you :-)

This will be an amazing photo of us all on the day and will be used on Social Media and hopefully some newspapers.  I will ensure that there are no bits showing – I have years of whiting out boobs on Photoshop at this stage (if there are any seen).

When Barbra is happy that she has all the photos she needs of the Group her photo aid Davina will run up onto the hill of the beach to prepare for a shot of us all going in from behind.  This will be the back of us so no-one recognisable only those who have seen your ass before maybe :-)    Once Davina is set up there we will get a countdown on the megaphone 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 then its run for your lives.

We have one more thing which we will do after the dip.  It’s the words Cancer Kickers and would love if anyone who has gone through cancer or is currently going through it would get in this shot as a celebration that there is life after cancer.

VERY IMPORTANT – PHONES AND PHOTOGRAPHY

There will be two photographers on the day and I will have someone take a video on my phone of us all running into the sea.    No other phones or photography allowed on the beach we have to respect each others privacy.  So please leave your phones in the car park.  If you want some “cheeky” shots of you and friends or family that’s no problem just ask the photographer and Barbra will give me all the photos and I can forward them to you.  Last few years we arranged messages on bums this is not planned for this year but please ladies if you want to do something for you and your friends please go for it and just tell the photographer you would like the shot.

Please be careful of putting pictures on Facebook from the car park please make sure that no other dipper is shown in a state of undress :-)

Suggest maybe bring a bottle of bubbly (cheap or expensive) and a couple of plastic glasses to toast ourselves afterwards. Please Please make sure you bring plastic bags for your rubbish, this is a private beach and they have had issues before with illegal dumping. Recently people left it in a mess and they have cleaned all the litter away at a huge cost to the property owner. They have been so kind to let us use this property we have to make sure not a scrap is left behind – thanks Ladies.

After the Dip

We are ALL going up to the Mariner Pub in Wicklow town for a drink or two. Here we hope to get as many people as possible including those that are not staying down we are hoping you will join us. Wayne our security man has kindly sorted food for us (and he has paid so kind) so there will be some hot platters going around and sambos. Sinead Hamill will be doing her Ditty about the Strip and Dip.  Wayne has organised some music for us too.  J J Jelwellers across the road are helping sponsor this event with music, food and security and will have 20% off for dippers on the day and they are just across the road from the pub.

90 of us staying over in Wicklow Town and you all know where you are staying at that stage. Roughly 14 other people as well joining us for the meal. Meet up in Bar of Grand Hotel for 8pm and go into dinner there for 8.30 for two course meal and coffee €25 per person paid by each person, if anyone wants to join us please let me know.   The hotel is putting on a DJ for us after in the main bar so it will be great and we can dance til the wee hours.

Donations

We would really prefer not to get cash donations due to the safety reasons. Maybe you could donate it to yourselves online if you have an idonate account.

However if you have cash donations please put it in an envelope with your name on it and give it to Mary Ball who will be manning a small desk and Grainne giving out hats and asking you to sign an insurance disclaimer to ensure we are all safe. A Big Thanks to You

A huge thanks to all of you doing this. I know around half of you personally and for some of you I know it takes a lot of courage to do this. We are going to have a FABULOUS DAY

To the people I don’t know personally and I have met through the blogs, we have chatted in the middle of the night when we couldn’t sleep, spoke in chemo rooms and helped each other out when things seemed really dark. Women are amazing people with huge hearts and we are all there to help each other. A lot of you are travelling from Cork, Kildare, Limerick, Laois, Dublin, Sweden, Austria, London, Liverpool, Essex and Rose Vacher came all the way from Australia to be with us.

Lastly this funding will make a huge difference to the children at Aoibheanns Pink Tie and their family and you have all gone above and beyond the call of duty with fund-raising.

As at 08.00 (Online Only Three days before) we have raised €22,702.00 – AMAZING – we will definitely smash all records this year ladies.

  • We will have a dinner in the Grand Hotel this year and cost approximately €25-27 per head and I will get numbers closer to the date

Offline Fundraising

  • It is of course okay as well do fundraise offline (all fundraising is great).  Youc an download a sponsorship card here and print it off

  • All monies collected should be lodged to the bank account of the Charity which I can provide details of.   However please let us know when you lodge it how much you are lodging so we can keep our totals.  Another thing you can do is any monies you have collected you can upload it online to the main idonate account which is  www.idonate.ie/kickingtheshiteoutofcancer   In the comments just put your name so we know it came from you
  • When you use the online facility the funds weekly go direct to the chartity

 Information on Aoibheanns Pink Tie

Aoibheann’s Pink Tie “National Children’s Cancer Charity” was set up in 2010 by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman after the tragic loss of Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann to cancer aged just 8 years. During Aoibheann’s year long battle with this dreadful disease, the family found little or no financial or practical support  for children and their families.

Jimmy and his family had a large support network of friends and family but found that many on the ward had virtually no support at all.

When Aoibheann passed away the men wore pink ties at the funeral which was Aoibheann’s favourite colour. The charity was formed in her memory to remedy the lack of support for other children and their families going through treatment.

Families of children diagnosed with cancer are completely and utterly focused on their sick child. The regular travel to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital from all over Ireland, the extended overnight stays consume all waking moments during this battle and the day to day necessities of life fall by the wayside or become impossible to manage. Medical cards are incredibly difficult to get if either spouse is in employment, mortgages, utility bills, motoring costs and general household bills become lost in the mire of the battle as they struggle with one of life’s worst nightmares. Phone bills, accommodation costs and medical bills become a huge burden for the parents who have to endure the nightmare of watching their child battle cancer.

Aoibheann’s Pink Tie will help and offer practical support to the families of children diagnosed with cancer and who are attending St John’s Oncology Ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. Focused on children attending the only treatment center for childhood cancer in Ireland, we will support the complete family unit, of parents and siblings, who may not understand what is happening to their Brother or Sister.
